Tackling Obesity 2012The Las Vegas sports community came together for a great cause today as the Jump for Joy Foundation put on their Tackling Obesity (Camp JUMP) event at the Pearson Community Center. Members of the UNLV Football team, Las Vegas Locos, Silver State Legacy Women's Tackle Football team & the LV Showgirlz Women's Tackle Football team hosted several stations to teach kids 5-17 years old the basic fundamentals of football. While the weather could have been better today, the worst weather waited until after the event was finished.

Even with the weather as bad as it was, over 130 kids including a couple of youth football teams showed up to make this event very successful.

The Locos hosted a running back station where a father and son team of Jim & Mike Fassel helped kids learn the basics of running the ball including hand-offs and running through several obstacles. They were even joined by Diesel, the Locos Mascot, who got into the action a little himself.

Several UNLV players, including Pinceton Jackson & Tim Cornett, took on a Defensive and Offensive Line station to teach the kids the basics of being a lineman. The kids had a blast with the UNLV crew and from what I saw, I think the Rebels had an even better time being around them. We also have to throw in that even though it was his birthday, Defensive Lineman Tyler Gaston took time out of his big day to spend it with the kids... Great Job Guys & Happy Birthday Tyler!

The Silver State Legacy hosted a Wide Receiver station where kids learned the basics of catching a football, running small routes and footwork while LV Showgirlz hosted a Defensive Back station.

After the Camp was finished there was a Punt, Pass & Kick competition to see which kids from several age groups could throw and kick the farthest, the best in each age group won an award. There was also several prizes that were given away including an autographed UNLV jersey that was signed by the entire UNLV Football team.

Also attending the event was Gil Revolorio, if that name doesn't sound familiar maybe the other name he goes by does: "Tiny". Gil (or Tiny) is well known for his court-side dances recently during UNLV home games. Gil took hold of the microphone during the pre-event presentation and made a very big promise as he swore that between now and 1 year from today, at next years event, that he will lose 100lbs.! It was an aw-inspiring promise that drew cheers from everyone in the crowd. Good luck "Tiny", we wish you the best in your endeavor and can't wait to see you next year!

All-In-All it was a Wonderful day for everyone involved! We were proud to be a part of the event and look forward to working with the Jump for Joy Foundation on further events in the near future!
