ngwsdSaturday afternoon the UNLV Lady Rebels hosted an event filled day for local youth as their special way of celebrating National Girls and Women In Sports Day (NGWSD), which since its inception in 1987, has become the premiere occasion to celebrate the participation, success and accomplishments of girls and women athletes from across the nation.

To start the day off, the UNLV Athletic DSC04601Department and the Lady Rebels celebrated the day by hosting their annual NGWSD All-Sport Clinic. This free clinic was open to all local children in 1st thru 8th grade and over 200 kids from across the valley participated. Various coaches and athletes from women's sports programs at UNLV hosted several stations in this fun-filled afternoon. Participants learned from the very best from UNLV in women sports such as soccer, volleyball, track & field, basketball, softball and cheerleading.

This years event was made even more special as the clinic was held in UNLV's Mendenhall Center, which is the Runnin' Rebels new multi-million dollar practice facility. They were the first group to ever use the facility since its opening less than a month ago and as an added treat, all participant's got a chance to tour the new state-of-the-art practice facility from top to bottom.

By participating in the clinic, each participant also received a free ticket to the Lady Rebels annual breast cancer awareness game. After the clinic the participants made their way into the Thomas & Mack Center and lined the court to welcome the Lady Rebels as they emerged from the locker room.

DSC04658This years game was appropriately titled "The Play4Kay Game" and was played in honor of former NC State coach Kay Yow, who lost her battle with breast cancer in 2009.The Lady Rebels adorned an all pink uniform specially for this game and prior to tip-off, the players along with Head Coach Kathy Olivier, honored several cancer surviors with special game balls.

Junior guard Mia Bell (a Durango HS Graduate & Las Vegas Native) would go on to score a game-high 22 points and help lead UNLV to a 65-60 victory over New Mexico in front of a season-high crowd. The win would improve the Lady Rebels to 19-8 on the year (7-4 in the MWC) which is the most wins for the Lady Rebs since the 2003-04 season.

Upon completion of the game, all clinic partcipants headed down to the the court to meet the Lady Rebels for photos and autographs.
