lvsportz-snysa-2011Six local Youth Athletes, three Coaches and six Leagues were honored last night in the First Annual Southern Nevada Youth Sports Awards. The awards honored local youth athletes and coaches below the High School level and were created as way to recognize them for their tremendous dedication, commitment and time to local youth sports and to the community as a whole.

The awards ceremony was held in the Multipurpose Room at the Sahara West Library on Sunday February 12th, 2012. Channel 13 News was on hand for the event and featured the story on their 11 O'clock newscast....

Youth coaches and athletes were nominated by other coaches, parents and athletes though a nomination process held via the LVSportz website and the winners were selected through a secret panel.

Youth Athletes of the Year were chosen not only for demonstrating great stats in their sport but for also showing excellent principles in teamwork, leadership, discipline, respect, sportsmanship, community involvement and a high or significantly rising grade point average. One Male and One Female youth athlete was chosen for every sport there was a nominee for. From those winners one Male and Female Overall Youth Athlete was chosen.

Youth Coaches of the Year were chosen for their overall Coaching Activities, Sportsmanship, Player Development (both on and off the field), Personal Coaching Development and their overall community involvement. One coach was chosen for every sport there was a nominee for. From the sport winners an Overall Coach was chosen.

For Youth Athlete of the Year the Winners Were:
Corey Stratton – Male, Baseball; Skyler Thompson – Male, Basketball; Emma Thompson – Female, Basketball; Domink Fama – Male, Flag Football; Gracie Garcia – Female, Flag Football; Martin Blake – Male, Tackle Football.

Martin Blake also won the Overall Male Youth Athlete of the Year while Gracie Garcia also took home the honor of Overall Female Youth Athlete of the Year.

For Youth Coach of the Year the Winner Were:
Bryan White – Baseball; Phil Thompson – Basketball; Robert Robinson – Tackle Football.

Robert Robinson was also honored as the Overall Youth Coach of the Year.

Also, during the Coach and Athlete nomination period an open poll vote was casted for the best youth leagues of the year and over 200 votes were received.

Based upon those votes the league winners were:
Peccole Little League for Baseball, The Western Unified Sports Athletic Program (WASUP) for Flag Football, Snoop Youth Football League of Southern Nevada for Tackle Football, Coast 2 Coast Sports Academy for Basketball and Diversity Youth Sports for Soccer & Volleyball.

While there were only a small number of nominees and votes for our first year, we plan on continuing this next year and for years to come. We hope for an even bigger turnout as more people become aware of this great program. We thank everyone for their involvement and support this year and would like once again to congratulate the winners!

Photo's from the event are located in our Sportz Shotz Gallery and on our Facebook Profile. Any attendees wishing to share your photos, please send them our way and we will post them!
