February 6 has been officially declared National Women and Girls in Sports Day by the Women’s Sports Foundation. In honor of women and girls in sports, The Las Vegas Showgirlz and WASUP Girlz Tackle Football League of Las Vegas are hosting the Sixth Annual Season-Kickoff and Community Event called All About Girls in Sports on Saturday,February 23, 2013 at the William U. Pearson Community Center located at 1625 W. Carey in North Las Vegas from 10:00am-3:00pm. The women’s football season begins in the Spring for the Showgirlz and they are encouraging all Las Vegas athletic supporters to come see them scrimmage and to demonstrate the game they love to play-football!

All About Girls in Sports is to give recognition to young girls who are involved in sports and to increase awareness of the benefits of being a part of a sports team. According to the Women’s Sports Foundation, aside from the known health benefits yielded by regular participation in sports and physical fitness, there are countless intangibles girls can take away from sports-lessons that will last a lifetime. Other key benefits include self-confidence, positive self-image, and higher states of psychological well-being.

Title IX (www.titleix.info) is a federal civil rights law that broke the barrier for women and girls to play sports that were traditionally male-dominated. Special attention is brought to the sports that are not currently being well represented by women and girls, such as football, wrestling, extreme sports, hockey and other contact sports. This event celebrates the movement with emphasis on girls tackle football with the launch of the WASUP Girls Tackle Football League, a nonprofit 503(c)corporation. They will be doing an orientation and administering sign-ups on this day for those who are interested in more information.

This celebration will include local vendors, raffles, contests, guest speakers and lots of football fun with a punt, pass, and kick challenge. Innovation Sports Association, an organization that teaches Extreme Sports such as skateboarding, BMX, scooters and roller blades, will be doing free introductory lessons in long boarding and skateboarding.

Come support All about Girls in Sports and be a part of ‘her-story’!
